Well folks, it's getting near time to kick in the Winter textures. Not yet, but soon.

When the snow hits the ground in Anchorage and stays there for at least 24 hours, we will call it "Winter" and then all pilots can (if they choose to) bring their winter texture packages out of storage!

Right now, there's snow in Fairbanks, so it's getting close. Anchorage still looks warm though :)

Here's Fairbanks:

Here's Anchorage:

Interestingly enough, here's Nome:

http://www.visitnomealaska.com/nome-cam/

So, if you haven't already got your winter figured out, you can get a couple of different choices for V10 and one choice for V9.7 Here they are:

V10: Winter Package Manual process by X-Flyer (just read the description carefully)

http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=24997

V10: Winter Package - more automated (sort of) (again, read carefully)

http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=25044

V10: "Simple Seasons" by She Pooley (one of our members) - reasonably easy to setup and install

http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=18061

V9 "Winter World" by Tom Curtis - just unzip and drop in Custom Scenery (won't work with V10)

http://forums.xplanefreeware.net/topic/6762-winter-world-25-for-xp-96/

Now, with some of us checking on occasion, we should be able to lock in on the exact date. It just means taking a quick glance at the Anchorage cam and then checking back a day later.

Needless to say, those working the new EPA territory will see a bit of snow and can use the packages for sure, noting that it is even more realistic since the main waterways don't freeze down there. :)

Cheers,

bc

Thanks for posting this info.  I have been wondering what my options were, and now you have provided them ...with links.  Awesome.

Which will you choose?

Any guesses on when the Winter criteria will be met?

My winter of choice is "Simple Seasons."  I've already had snow show up once or twice in the northlands.

Hiya Rocky,

Well, I use Simple Seasons in my V10 (works fine in 10.4+) and Curtis' in my V9. Frankly I've never gotten around to X-Flyer's stuff, as it looked like quite a study and time is usually of the essence for me.

Hmmm. Winter criteria for Anchorage. I predict November 13th for one full 24 hour period with enough snow on the ground to see. How's that? :D

@rick.hudd:  same here, on both counts.  Can't wait to hit a fierce little snow squall, almost certainly in the mountains while navigating visually.

Still early for any snow that will stay around the Anchorage area. Still getting a lot of termination dust Flew through some a month ago from Sleetmute to Aniak, but it was probably gone by the afternoon. Will inform here when we actually get something worth reporting.

Snowing in Northway at the moment, Icy runways and my C185 had to abort as it got too heavy to take off.  It may be too early to switch to winter world, but it's not too early for getting grounded due to snow and ice! ;)

Is that falling snow or snow-on-the-ground?

WINTER IS NOW "ON"

Our man on the ground, Alaskadad, who only needs to look out his window to see what's happening, has made the call.

From now until who knows when, it's winter in Alaska :D

I'm working through ShePooley's latest readme for her winter texture script and this is where I realize just how technologically challenged I am... but I plod along. I am looking forward to having the seasonal textures change automatically.

And just for fun, I tossed in some Trees of Fall while I get refreshed in Washington state:

The snow scenery is nice Rocky but I can't say I'm partial to the fall trees.

Thanks for sharing these though.

Agreed, the fall colors are a bit clownish.  I made an attempt to subdue the author's textures, but they still look dorky.  The natural look is not easy to obtain.

May I suggest you to take a look a the "Seasons dataref-driven-libraries"?

I'm using it and the first impression is quite good.
