This "news" just in; A historic Britsh Vulcan bomber XH558 on the way to an airshow in Anchorage made an emergency landing in the small town of Tok Alaska when a fuel leak was discovered. Residents flocked to see the large vintage flying wing as it sat on the tarmac at their local airport. Repair crews and supposrt equipment were flown in and the aircraft continued to it's destination the following day. The pilot stated that "it was a bit of a sticky wicket, but we didn't want to risk a fire on this last flying example of a proud and irreplacable bit of British flying history".

A relatively normal landing for a change, just to show that I do know how to do them LOL! Flew 8 passengers home from Grayling. Winds were light and variable, and generally from the South, so I just came straight in instead of coming back over Circle Island which is a cleaner approach with fewer obstructions (trees) to clear. This approach is much more scenic in X-Plane though and affords a nice view of lower part of the town.

7 kt winds, 8 passengers plus cargo bound for stops along the Yukon River. The passengers paid me in dried fish, so I gave them an STOL takeoff just for the halibut...

You might want to avoid this LRRS with anything but a STOL bush craft, as you'll see. I was fuel critical though and needed to stop somewhere to get a bit of 100LL in the DC-3.

  • Big wind landing near Vancouver

A real big wind landing, 40+ MPH with gusts high enough to make the Annie "hover" at 100kph (~60 mph). I had a heck of a time setting her down with a load of nine executive types who wrote me a check for almost enough to buy the plane to take them from Vancouver International to their working retreat out in the hills. Air sick bags got used up on the way in, and the landing was an adventure to say the least. May need to get the tail wheel looked at... This is what passes for "light and variable winds" according to the local weather geek who doubtlessly got big kickbacks if the tourists got brought in during such weather.

While in the midst of building the fleet specs for EPOCH and chatting with one of our Adventure Architects, Zymurg, I realised that it might be useful (and fun) to show a full STOL takeoff with this fine Carenado model.

Landing the Antonov AN-2 at Regal Glacier. I came in a bit high and ran off the end of the strip a couple hundred feet, but very survivable. The spinning compas is an anomaly on playback, as is the factthet the lower wing flaps do not show as deployed (both worked fine during the actual landing). Also the brake lever does not appear to move, however brake application would coincide with hauling back on the yoke, so you can get an idea from that. This is my first attempt at editing three separate videos together to make a seamless movie, and I am pretty happy with the result!

He lives up to his name, piloting the AN-2 through what could be called an 'interesting' wind scenario :D
